Student Screenings of The Dumpling Queen (Chinese Culture for All: A Special Performance Series)

Commemorating the 25th anniversary Silver Jubilee of the Hong Kong Film Archive, a special student screening of The Dumpling Queen (2025) will be organized for educational purposes in October 2026.  To deepen students' appreciation for the history of Chinese perseverance and traditional virtues, scholar or film critics will be invited as a speaker of the post-screening talk and lead an interactive appreciation session, guiding students to analyze the film's context.  Through this event, students will gain a profound understanding of how modern Chinese communities thrived through self-reliance during challenging times, allowing them to appreciate the depth of Chinese culture and foster a stronger sense of national pride.

The Dumpling Queen is a 2025 biographical drama based on a true story.  Starring Ma Li as the lead, the film is adapted from the entrepreneurial journey of Chong Kin-wo, the founder of the Hong Kong frozen food brand Wanchai Ferry.  It tells the story of her struggle from being a single mother who fled to Hong Kong to becoming a well-known entrepreneur.  In the 1970s, Chong Kin-wo, a woman from Qingdao, was forced to leave her hometown with her two daughters.  To make ends meet and raise her children, she washed dishes by day and cleaned cars by night.  With no one to rely on, she bore the immense pressure alone.  Determined to break free from her fate, she decided to make a living by selling dumplings.  From struggling to attract customers to eventually thriving, she received much support from tough-but-kind Hong Jie, Brother Hua, and Uncle Dessert.  Through hard work and perseverance, she turned her dumpling business into a success, and her life gradually opened up to new possibilities...

A post-screening talk of approximately 30 minutes will be held after the film ends.
