  • Participating students will have public performances at a professional performing venue

Content

Reference articles of the Chinese Language curriculum are used as the starting point of the performance script. The content of the articles are played out in a theatrical format, based on the six elements of play put forward by Aristotle, i.e. character, plot, thought, diction, spectacle and music. As students comprehend the articles, the process would involve more than just the traditional one-way teaching by teachers. Instead, students would be able to make use of their imagination in drama creation, picturing the image of the characters in their mind, or even break away from the shackles of time and space, turning mundane reality into a realm of beauty and surrealism, which in turn could bring new interpretation and meaning to the original texts.

According to the concept “From Page to Stage” believed by Prospects Theatre, the finale stage production is essential. Students could experience the charisma of theatre and learn about team spirit, which are beneficial to the development of the youth. Participating students in this project will each get three performance opportunities: in-school, for the community and at the finale performance.

For Secondary Schools

Zeng Zi Killing A Pig by Zeng Zi

Zeng Zi Killing A Pig is a piece of classical Chinese writing. In this piece of writing, Zeng Zi taught his children to lead by example and to treat others honestly. At the same time, Zeng Zi Killing A Pig is also a guide to adults to reflect on their own words and deeds as they would have a profound impact on the education of their children.

Kite by Lu Xun

Kite is a prose, in which the author took a kite as the lead and reflected deeply on his words and deeds of “treating his little brother roughly”. Although the text is mainly narrative, the author’s thoughts and feelings were integrated deeply into it, while it is also a profound reflection on traditional feudal concepts about children’s education.

A Thousand Pieces of Candy Wrapper by Tie Ning

A Thousand Pieces of Candy Wrapper is an article written by female author Tie Ning. The story leads us as adults to reflect on the relationship between adults and children, and questions our moral conscience: How should we be treating children? What would be the significance and impact to children if they are cheated by adults?

For Primary Schools
Snow Kid, Carrying the Donkey into the City and Hero of Love Selling Vegetables respectively represent topics such as self and moral which are worthy of thinking for primary school students. Students can directly interpret these texts or take them as the starting point of creation.

For Special Schools

As students of special schools have different abilities, drama instructors from the arts group would discuss with the school the teaching plan that tailor-made for the students. Scripts could be selected from the above reference articles, or be extracted from actual life experiences among students. Details of everyday life such as the process of learning, reading signs, having conversations, answering phone calls, writing memo, etc, could be adopted into the play. These would make it easier for students to grasp the concepts and facilitate their acting.
