Programme Content

After having lived in the United States, philosophy professor Teddy returns home to the United Kingdom with his wife Ruth. In the U.K., the couple’s relationship begins to change and the distance between them grows. Teddy’s father Max later finds out about the flirtatious relationships between Teddy’s two brothers and Ruth. As Teddy considers going back to America with her, Max comes up with a surprising suggestion... What path would Ruth follow? Only she herself can decide.

British theatre giant Harold Pinter was hailed by the Nobel Literature Prize as “having changed the face for 20th century theatre”, and The Homecoming is one of his masterpieces which was awarded the Tony Award for Best Play. Its 40th anniversary Broadway revival in 2008 was nominated for the Tony Award, for Best Revival of a Play. Employing a controversial language and depicting equally provocative relationships, The Homecoming reveals the abnormality and corrupted conventions in the patriarchal society of 19th century Britain. Featuring a new translation by Paul Poon, the current production is directed by Prof. Ceri Sherlock, Chair of School of Drama at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, taking up the challenge together with the cast to interpret this masterpiece as HKRep’s season finale.
