Highlights and Objectives

  • A year-round drama production project
  • For secondary and primary schools
  • Project includes drama, character and script analysis, set and costume design, rehearsals as well as performances
  • Aims to cultivate students’ interest in reading and enhance their understanding of literary works

Content

In this project, professional instructors will join up with students to recreate a script from selected literary masterpieces and merge it with visual arts to re-enact the classic. Their learning outcomes will be presented to and shared with fellow teachers and students of their schools.

Adventure with Robinson Crusoe (for primary 4 to 6)
Robinson Crusoe is a classic literary adventure and a children’s favourite. Employing the method of process drama, the instructor will guide students to work into the roles of the story, including Robinson Crusoe, his father, his friends, etc. They will go through the dilemmas of Crusoe and create the situations he faced and the solutions he made on the desolated island.

Working with the instructor, students will base their work on the story of Robinson Crusoe and incorporate the situations they imagined during the process drama session to come up with a new script. They will also be designing and producing the sets for their selected segments.

Re-imagine the master piece of Osamu Tezuka’s Phoenix (for secondary schools)
Phoenix is a masterpiece of illustrious Japanese manga artist Osamu Tezuka. The story is about a mystical Phoenix, with mysterious blood, which is believed to grant eternal life to human. The characters in the manga story span across the ancient times to the future. They try to overcome destiny by fighting for Phoenix. The story leads to a discussion about the value of life and making choices.

By turning a manga tale into the script of a play, students delve deep into the plot and theme of the story. They will be rehearsing from the script and perform the conflicts and emotions of the characters to gain deeper insights into the roles. Students’ craftsmanship and artistic senses will also be nurtured when they employ visual art techniques in the creation of stage sets and costumes.

Implementation

The project will last for 10 months, from October 2017 to July 2018, and will be implemented in three phases:
